Write min. 2 pages in journal: Define propaganda (Oxford Dictionary) and then paraphrase (say in your own words). What do you know about propaganda? Give some examples from real life, history, etc.

HW Due Tues. 11/14

Min. 2 pages: Divide your journal into halves - make a T-chart. Left side titled "text evidence" and right side titled "response/analysis". Be sure to title the page with the text title and author name, and the date of the entry.
Choose evidence from what we have read so far, being careful not to copy full paragraphs but zone in on words, phrases, small pieces of select evidence.
Respond to the text/analyze it in terms of how Henry's background contributes to his purpose and how well he uses the rhetorical situation to argue his message.

New due date for Opinionated (see post below).

Buy Night. We will begin to read it in the next two weeks.

UPDATED DUE DATE: Opinionated now due Nov. 22

New due date: day before Thanksgiving break. If you will be absent, it is your responsibility to turn it in digitally and in print before the due date.

I will supply you with at least one exemplar (opinionated written by other students) so you can grade and see how well they did against the rubric. This will give you a sense of what to do and what not to do on your own published piece.

We will use the class period to work on "Opinionated" - reading/annotating/SOAPSTone+R and conferences (Timed Writing - "On Censorship). I am working on getting us laptops.

Due Thursday: Write min. 2 pages in your journal: What topics, if any, should be censored in school? Explain your examples with logical reasoning/anecdotes/analogies.

Due Thursday at the end of class: 
SOAPSTone+R for "A Civic Duty to Annoy"
Answer all questions at end of essay (on loose leaf, completely and thoughtfully):

  1. Background and Context
  2. Strategy, Structure, and Style
  3. Comparisons and Connections
All work will be collected at the end of the period tomorrow.

Continue to work on "Opinionated" - due Nov. 17. Late papers will not be accepted. Please see me if you have questions well in advance of due date.

Timed Writing RA "On Censorship"

Note on RA Timed Writing Scores:
Once all of the essays are scored (grades won't be posted on PupilPath until you score your own and we conference), you will be self-assessing your timed writing using General Writing Rubric and teacher comments.
You will:
Read rubric.
Read comments.
Make notes where your writing falls on rubric (can be across multiple levels)
Write a short reflection on what you did well and why, and create a "to do" list: what you will do better next time.


HW Due Wed: 2 page min. in journal - (page 1) What annoys you? What do you do about it? (page 2) How do you annoy others? What is done about it?
